The Hathras police in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday arrested a 54-year-old professor and chief proctor of a government-aided college for allegedly raping several women students and filming the act.
The professor was arrested from Prayagraj. Earlier, on March 15, the police booked him for alleged rape and sexual intercourse by a person in authority, and under the provision of the Information Technology Act. This was after a student sent an anonymous complaint to the police, saying that she anticipated a threat to her life.
Chiranjeev Nath Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Hathras, said the professor admitted to sexually assaulting eight women. “He recorded the videos to blackmail the women repeatedly,” said the SP.
Sinha said the police began an inquiry into the matter after they received the complaint and constituted three teams. They also began to search for the professor, who was on the run after the case was registered against him.
“He kept his phone switched off ever since the FIR was registered,
making it difficult for the surveillance team to get hold of him,” a
